Tomorrow's the moon cake festival

Tomorrow's the 15th day of the Chinese eighth month. The Mid-Autumn Festival. But nobody's worshipping the Moon Goddess any more. That went out of fashion after the Americans landed on the moon in 1969. But we Chinese are still celebrating the festival. What better way to do this than by eating mooncakes? It's an industry by itself. For the past fortnight, shopping centres have been falling all over themselves to promote moon cakes. Moon cakes of all exotic tastes. It's no longer fashionable to buy mooncakes made with the traditional white lotus paste. Indeed, it's even considered passe if you were to buy mooncakes with lingyong filling. They now come with all sorts of imaginative fillings and all types of imaginative names such as Pearly Jade with Omochi and Golden Jade Light with one yolk. Of course, all these are targeted at your hard-earned money.

Believe it or not, these are the only two mooncakes that I've bought this year. Two! That's all. "Pure Lotus Double Yolk" and "Green Tea". And it was selling at a 30 percent discount in the bakery. No doubt come tomorrow, I'll bet that the bakery will be getting rid of their stock with a 50 percent discount. Anyway, I'm due to go down to my clansman association tomorrow morning for the traditional 15th day of the eighth month prayers. I'll be bringing back more mooncakes! That's for sure!

I'll also be enjoying the moon biscuits tonight. See? I haven't even ripped open the wrapping yet. These aren't your normal, everyday moon biscuits. There's filling inside of dried prawns. I tell you, they're heavenly!
