Chess @ Hanoi SEA Games, Round 8

At the end of the eighth round of the Standard Chess competition at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, we've just witnessed two victories from Yeoh Li Tian and Tan Li Ting. Li Tian still stands equal on points with Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Ervan Mohamad and it is going down to the wire tomorrow. Nobody else can touch them.

Tomorrow's crucial pairings for the gold medal:
Tran Tuan Minh vs Ervan Mohamad
Laohawirapap Prin vs Yeoh Li Tian
Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son vs Lye Lik Zang

In the event that these three players win their games tomorrow, it will still be equal at the top and the medal placings will be decided by tie-breaks. But I should also mention that Li Tian stands on the cusp of claiming his third and final grandmaster norm. I really hope he succeeds in this quest.

Li Ting also played very well this afternoon to crush her opponent. Unfortunately, both our two other representatives - Lye Lik Zang and Puteri Munajjah lost their games and they are languishing at the bottom of the standings in their respective sections.

  1. With LT’s win on R8, he is very much in the running for the final GM norm and more importantly the gold medal !

A draw is enough to attain the final norm while a win will guarantee at least Silver medal. Gold medal is possible if Ervan fails to win his final round.
