Chess @ Hanoi SEA Games, Round 1

Left to right: Lye Lik Zang, Puteri Munajjah, Tan Li Ting, Yeoh Li Tian and Sumant Subramaniam

The chess competition in the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam started today with the Standard Chess event. We have four representatives in this event, led by our strongest player, Yeoh Li Tian, who is an International Master. Our other competitors are Lye Lik Zang, Tan Li Ting and Puteri Munajjah. I wish them all the best in this tournament. As usual, Malaysia is banking on Li Tian to defend his title from the 30th SEA Games and bring back a gold medal. Here are their games from the first round.

Position after 60....a5
This is an exquisitely patient game by Li Tian, squeezing a win from a position that could almost end drawn. His king dominated the board and the opponent's extra pawn, albeit doubled, proved useless.
