Today, I'm looking at the list of participants in the Open and Women's sections of the Standard Chess competition at the 31st SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam. I won't be commenting on the competition's progress but shall confine myself to looking at the starting list.
The Open section is quite strong and Yeoh Li Tian will certainly have his work cut out for him. There are four grandmasters in his tournament and although two of them are rated lower than him, the other two must surely be more favoured to win the Gold medal in this event. The firm favourite is Vietnam's Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son who has won a previous edition of the Malaysia Open some years ago. He stands head and shoulders above his second-seeded compatriot, Tran Tuan Minh. And only then comes Li Tian as the third seed.
GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Vietnam) 2641
GM Tran Tuan Minh (Vietnam) 2533
IM Yeoh Li Tian (Malaysia) 2523
IM Wynn Zaw Htun (Myanmar) 2508
GM Priasmoro Novendra (Indonesia) 2501
IM Tin Jingyao (Singapore) 2499
GM Gomez John Paul (Philippines) 2442
IM Nay Oo Kyaw Tun (Myanmar) 2385
IM Quizon Daniel (Philippines) 2384
IM Ervan Mohamad (Indonesia) 2367
FM Lye Lik Zang (Malaysia) 2358
CM Laohawirapap Prin (Thailand) 2210
Unlike the Open section which is a nine-round Swiss event, the Women's section has only 10 players which means that the organisers could fit in a Round Robin event with also nine rounds. The top seed is Irine Sukandar of Indonesia but not far behind here are Singapore's Gong Qianyun, who is a China import, and Vietnam's own Vo Thi Kim Phung. There are four woman grandmasters breathing down Irine's neck, so she had better watch her back!
IM Sukandar Irine Kharisma INA 2392
WGM Gong Qianyun (Singapore) 2348
WGM Vo Thi Kim Phung (Vietnam) 2340
WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram (Vietnam) 2272
WGM Frayna Janelle Mae (Philippines) 2221
WIM Citra Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia INA 2211
WIM Fronda Jan Jodilyn (Philippines) 2141
WFM Tan Li Ting (Malaysia) 2087
WIM Azhar Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa (Malaysia) 2059
WCM Prommuang Araya (Thailand) 1628
Meanwhile in today's third round, both Yeoh Li Tian and Lye Lik Zang scored resounding wins in their games. Li Tian maintained his fine momentum while Lik Zang finally got into his stride. The two women representatives both lost. And here are the games of our four representatives.
