First, just a little comment about the Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son-Yeoh Li Tian game from the fourth round two days ago. Methinks, the Vietnamese has too much respect for our Malaysian player or else the grandmaster wouldn't have offered our international master such a quick draw. The choice of opening itself was the clue. Philidor Defence? That's truly drawish.

LT is likely to target GM norm rather than defending his gold (which previously won under rapid time control).
LT is likely to play lower pointers in the next 3 rounds. Scoring 2.5/3 is enough to attain his final GM norm.

If I’m the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia, I may not be happy with LT’s decision. This is a multi sports competition, and his country is expecting him to fight hard to get the gold medal. Taking & offering quick draws in pursuit of his personal goal is rather selfish and unreasonable. Of course, I’m a foreigner and may be wrong in the assessment. Hope his decision pays off after round 9.
P/s : at his current strength, the final GM norm is well within his reach. Just baffled as to why he chose to risk the gold medal for his norm in SEA games
Seng Sun, these fools do not understand that the medals and norm are related. In fact I suspect he might need more points for the norm than the Medals. Li Tian knows what is necessary. Let him play as he wishes.
Nope. 6.5/9 will get him the final GM norm but not necessary the gold medal. Why waste a opportunity to play for a win against the leader by offering a quick draw?
With LT’s win on R8, he is very much in the running for the final GM norm and more importantly the gold medal !
A draw is enough to attain the final norm while a win will guarantee at least Silver medal. Gold medal is possible if Ervan fails to win his final round.
