In the last 24 hours, we've read of India winning the Thomas Cup for the very first time. They had beaten Indonesia 3-0 in the finals. It was unfortunate for Malaysia that India had also beaten us 3-2 on their way to this glory.
The Thomas Cup was named after Sir George Thomas who was a founder and the first president of the International Badminton Federation. I've written about him previously in one of my stories in The Star newspaper decades ago but the story is now long forgotten. Therefore, let me say here that he was also an International Master (1950) and International Arbiter (1952). In his lifetime, he had defeated former world champions Mikhail Botvinnik, Jose Raul Capablanca and Max Euwe in tournament games.
