When was the last time I had a plate of char koay teow? Maybe more than two months ago, possibly even three. It's not a regular with me because as one ages, one becomes more careful about the food one eats. So street food like char koay teow or curry mee becomes a once-in-a-long-while foodie love affair.
But this morning, I decided it was about time that I pamper myself with either of these two street food. Headed to the Taman Bukit food court in Bukit Mertajam. The curry mee stall there has a Bib Gourmand from Michelin and is always very popular, but the char koay teow stall, not in the food court but the nearby coffee shop, is the unsung hero, in my opinion. The lady hawker fries a mean plate, full of umami flavour and if one prefers something else, there's always their economy beehoon that comes with pieces of crunchy soya bean sticks.
And speaking about char koay teow, I feel consumers - especially tourists - are shortchanged when they go for huge prawns; maybe the plate comes with two or at most three, and the consumer is charged RM10, RM12, RM15 for that plate? I prefer the hawkers who offer smaller prawns but fry a consistent plate in the process. That way, I feel there are more bites in the food and it's more enjoyable. But then, every consumer for himself.
