Over the past weekend, we conducted the third and fourth sessions of the student leadership workshop at Penang Free School with their Sixth Form students. While some Fourth Formers participated initially, they had to skip the recent sessions due to their examinations this week. In fact, we even had to move aside half the examination tables that were already arranged in the school hall just to gain enough space for our workshop participants to move around. Of course, having done that on Saturday morning, we had to ensure that the tables were put back in their original spaces before we left the school on Sunday afternoon.
We found ourselves reduced to only 13 participants for the weekend. This was too small a number by my reckoning but we pressed on to complete the workshop for their sake. However, the small number of participants did not simplify our task. On the contrary, we found that we had to slow down our presentations to impress our ideas clearer and make them understood to all, More so when half the class, despite their age and greater maturity, found themselves struggling with the concepts earlier.
Anyway for last weekend's sessions, we were fortunate to have assistance from several workshop alumni who recognised the value of their past leadership training. With eight workshops completed since 2017, Kar Yang, Dharveshan, Dharveen, Yoveenraj, Jaysynney, Luvinassh and Afan returned to contribute, along with a supportive visit from Shawn. (Shawn is now a teacher in Grik and he is doing a great work with the pupils there, who are mostly from the orang asli.) Hats off to these dedicated individuals!
