Lim (Guan Eng) also said that the state government was considering a proposal to declare July 7, 2010 a public holiday to mark the recognition of Georgetown as a world heritage site by Unesco. "We will celebrate the first anniversary of the recognition on July 7 this year, and we are considering declaring a public holiday on that date next year," he said.Good for George Town. I mean, the public holiday is secondary but the celebration of the UNESCO recognition is primary to George Town and by extension, to Penang. And I hope come this month-end, UNESCO will clear George Town of any wrong-doing in the controversy surrounding the four proposed high-rise hotels in the city.
A report from today's news services say that more than 300 aircraft similar to the missing Air France jet — an Airbus A330-200 — are in service worldwide. The report continues that investigators still do not know if Flight AF 447 was travelling at an incorrect speed as it crossed a storm cluster.
An aviation expert said the plane’s airspeed sensors, called pitot tubes, work on air pressure and might provide incorrect readings if they get obstructed by objects such as ice.
The tubes are heated to prevent icing at high altitude and there was no immediate information on what went wrong. If pilots believe the flawed readings are right, they might mistakenly alter their speed, jeopardising their plane.
Airbus said the correct procedure when confronted by unreliable speed indications was to maintain thrust and pitch and start trouble shooting. The Airbus telex has revived a long-standing debate among pilots over whether the Airbus planes are overly complex.
“This is a plane that is conceived by engineers for engineers and not always for pilots,” Jean-Pierre Albran, a veteran pilot of Boeing 747s, told Le Parisien newspaper. “For example on a 747, the throttle is pushed by hand. You feel it move in turbulence. On recent Airbuses, this throttle is fixed. You look at the dials. You don’t feel anything.”
My question is this: which airlines flying within or into Malaysia are using the A330-200? If there is any, what do they have to say about the safety of their aircraft and, inter alia, their passengers?
My friend Ted loves all kinds of Japanese food. Ask him to recommend the best Japanese restaurant in the city and he'll tell you where. Right now, his favourite seems to be the restaurant at the G Hotel in Gurney Drive. All he does is to tell the chef Anything Goes and the chef will whip up off-the-menu items just for him."This area is pleasant and enchanting, with a cool, serene and tranquil ambience. Visitors to this area will definitely feel the difference and be mesmerised with the vegetation and greenery which set the Lily pond apart from its surroundings. With the background of a hilly terrain on the left and right sides, the Lily Pond is covered with the natural vegetation of the primary forest. A rippling waterfall flows into the pond decked with aquatic plants. This is indeed beautifully landscaped."When I visited the Botanic Gardens recently, I told myself that I must visit the Lily Pond. I hadn't been here for more than 20 years. Would it still retain its old charm and character? With a lot of expectation, I trod along one of the parallel paths that led inwards to the pond. Lush greenery surrounded me on both sides of the path and I could feel the temperature dropping by one or two degrees. Mmm ... refreshing.

If the Penang government is serious about going green, making shoppers pay for plastic bags only once a month is not enough. It's only like a symbolic gesture.
“I have to accept my defeat as I accept my victories.I have to keep a cool head to try and analyse what I did wrong. I need to learn and you learn more when you lose than when you win. I need to work on those points on which I wasn’t good and from there, try and do better for my next tournament. So this is not a tragedy. This is sport.”

The Hard Rock Hotel is set to open its doors in Batu Ferringhi this September. It'll be one of only 10 around the world. The others are in Bali, Pattaya, San Diego, Chicago, Biloxi, Hollywood, Las Vegas, Macau and Tampa. So these cities will keep Penang in very good company! Apart from the American-sized meals that we'd expect from the mainstay Hard Rock Cafe, we can now look forward to savour the Hard Rock hospitality business.
Hard Rock Hotel Penang (occupying the former Casuarina Hotel land beside the sea) will have 249 rooms and suites with unprecedented view of the hill and sea, and they are fully equipped with DVD/CD players, LCD TVs, iPod docking stations and WiFi connectivity. But there's no mention whether each room will come equipped with a sound system for a totally private audio-visual experience. I suppose not.Foodies will definitely be spoilt for choice with five food and beverage outlets: the famous Hard Rock Cafe, all-day dining restaurant Starz Diner, the Pizzeria by the poolside, The Shack pool bar and at the Lobby Lounge.
Now, let's see whether this September, I can pick up an authentic Hard Rock Cafe Penang t-shirt...
This is the fourth of a five-part instalment on what was considered to be Asia's premier chess tournament for teams. Malaysia finished in last place but then, we weren't expected to be first among the eight teams that competed in this inaugural event.

My wife was a little suspicious when I told her about the Penang Flora Fair 2009. "Are you going there?" she said me. "Don't you think of buying back any more plants," she said. "There's hardly any more space for you to put them."The chess articles here are taken from the old homepage of the Penang Chess Association on Geocities. I wrote them about 10 years old, taken from old records and newspaper cuttings in my possession.
