Chess @ Hanoi SEA Games (rapid chess medallists)

Podium finish for Sim Jia Ru (far right) who was the joint Bronze medallist with Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong (second from right). The Gold medal went to Pham Le Thao Nguyen (second from left) while Gong Qianyun (far left) took the Silver.

Busy day for me. Had been spending the whole day on running endless errands and travelling from the south till the north of the island. But I came home to the pleasant confirmation that Malaysia has won a Bronze medal in chess at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam.

Actually, I had heard last night that Malaysia's Sim Jia Ru was assured of a medal in the women's Rapid chess individual competition regardless of the outcome of today's games. Jia Ru had qualified through the preliminary rounds of this event yesterday. The semi-finals were played this morning but unfortunately, she had lost twice to her opponent, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, who went on to win the Gold medal.

Therefore, congratulations to Jia Ru for this medal. The colour doesn't matter. Important thing is that you have done well. And let's hope that this medal will not be the only one.

So what can we look forward to tomorrow? Well, the Rapid team competitions for the Open and Women's sections will start tomorrow. Our representatives in the Open section are Wong Yinn Long and Lim Zhuo Ren. Jia Ru will feature in the Women's section together with Tan Li Ting. Both sections will be played as a five-round Round Robin tournament. Best of luck to them!
