Moon cakes @ Equatorial

How much are you willing to pay for moon cakes this year? With the going rate between RM8 and RM10 per moon cake, a box of four of the delicacies will set you back by about RM40. But then, you'll likely be able to get a very nice decorative box to go with the moon cakes. If you are one that goes "wow" and cannot resist the box, then I suppose you will not mind forking out the money.

When I first saw this poster on display inside a lift at the Hotel Equatorial in Penang, I thought initially that the Golden Phoenix Restaurant night have gotten the decimal point in the wrong place. But then I wondered how could their moon cakes be so cheap?? This is a five-star restaurant in a five-star hotel.

I looked closer and the poster showed how wrong I was! RM3.20++ per moon cake? No, it's RM32++ per moon cake! That's almost RM37. Would you be prepared to pay RM37 for a moon cake? And that's only the starting price!

I would think twice about paying RM37 for a moon cake even if the filling is supposed to be pan-fried salmon fish or braised fresh scallop or pan-fried cod fish fillet. Not even if the moon cake is coated with gold leaf. Yes, the moon cakes are extraordinary all right but no, thank you. The prices are already giving me indigestion just by looking at them!

Moon cake with Salmon + Scallop, sound like dumpling to me. Hey most of the moon cake producers are very innovative to get their product to sell in the market by coming out a new product per year on Moon cake festival.

Unfortunately, they could not attract me as I'm still prefer the traditional Mix nuts and lotus... hehehe...
