Carnarvon Lane, Penang

Would you believe that my paternal grandparents used to rent a room in one of these dilapidated houses in Carnarvon Lane during the late 1960's? The main bedroom on the upper floor would be partitioned into two halves and they stayed in one of them. When it rained, the whole road would be flooded. Those were really difficult times for them. The houses were really dark and lit with incandescent light bulbs as fluorescent tubes were luxury items in those days.

actually these houses can be quite nice when done up again. malacca is seeing a fair bit of 'upgrades'... though i know not everyone agree with the commercialisation.

btw, nice pic :)

Hi, quachee, I believe George Town is getting their conservation act together too. There was an article in The Star recently on some conservation efforts with a conservationist saying that heritage buildings can be repaired quite cheaply. Personally, I don't agree with him.
