The race that stopped a nation

Down the wire and winning by a nose. That's how close this year's Melbourne Cup turned out to be. The multi-million dollar Race Of The Year on 4 Nov 2008 was a heart-stopping finish with Viewed holding off Bauer to win in the longest (approximate) three-and-a-half minutes in the Cup's recent history. Viewed was trained by 80-year-old Bart Cummings and piloted by 21-year-old jockey Blake Shinn who wore the legendary racing silk of 82-year-old owner Dato Tan Chin Nam: a jacket and cap with a chessboard black and white check, yellow sleeves. This win also transported Dato Tan into the record books as the most successful horse owner in the Melbourne Cup's history. Four wins. He won his first Cup in 1974 with Think Big and followed up with the 1975 Cup, also with the same horse. But it was a long wait until 1996 to win the Cup a third time with Saintly. And now, another 12 years later, a fourth triumph. Viewed's win was worth A$3.3 million to Dato Tan.
