Tobey and Bobby

Who needs spiders when we have chess? Who needs Spiderman when we have Bobby Fischer?

I heard that a biopic on the legendary American chess grandmaster is in the works and the Great Man himself may be played by none other than Tobey Maguire. Potential title of the film? Pawn Sacrifice.

The film should be centred around 1972 when Fischermania hit the world. It would cover the run up to his match with Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, the drama that went into the 21 games and the events that unfolded later. But it is unlikely that the film will touch on Fischer's latter years when his reclusiveness, eccentricities, anti-Semitism .... and, what else? .... really overshadowed his brilliance.

So if Maguire plays Fischer, don't expect to see him fully bearded like the Wild Man that was caged up in Tokyo's Narita Airport while fighting extradiction to the United States.
