Here's a moot question for discussion: a "what if" situation. In my last story on the Malaysian teams at the Chess Olympiad in India, I mentioned that at first, Sim Jia Ru was reluctant to play in the 10th round against Albania, having seen an earlier chance of earning her Woman Fide Master title disappear with a loss in the previous round. But ultimately, she agreed to play. But what if the Malaysian women's team had played Albania without her and still lost the match? The team would still have been paired with a weak opponent in the last round and Jia Ru, maybe having recovered somewhat from her traumatic ninth round loss, would she have been in a better frame of mind to play and possibly win her game and gain that title? Well, we can talk till the end of time without knowing the answer better. But back to reality. Jia Ru did sit out the final round of the Chess Olympiad. In her absence, the women's team gained a narrow 2½-1½ win against Nicaragua, the points coming from Puteri Munajjah and Agnes Chong while Puteri Rifqah drew her game.
Actually, both the women's and men's teams finished the Chess Olympiad on a positive winning note. Other than this 2½-1½ win against Nicaragua, the men's team had a rather expected and comfortable 3-1 result against Cyprus. But don't be flattered. Overall though, I believe both teams had under-performed. Especially, the men's team under-performed without the services of a bona fide fifth player. After Lye Lik Zang was laid low with a Covid-19 infection prior to departure, the responsibility landed on all four players to perform. It was a heavy task on them. Perhaps the team captain, Sumant Subramaniam, should have stepped in more often when the going went tough on the boys. But I'm very happy to note that the biggest winner was Poh Yu Tian, who will be Malaysia's latest Fide Master. He played on the fourth board most of the time and only climbed to third board twice when Lim Zhuo Ren and Wong Yinn Long were unable to play. In the next Fide rating list, his ELO rating will have risen from 2118 to 2244, an increase of an astounding 126 points!
Then of course, we've to address the elephant in the room. We have a young and promising team but...where was Yeoh Li Tian? Yes, where was Yeoh Li Tian, arguably Malaysia's strongest and most talented player? Why wasn't he playing to represent his country in the biggest team competition in the world? Is the Chess Olympiad not big enough? This would have been the perfect stage for him to go for his Grandmaster title; if not a direct title, then to achieve his third and final norm. Oddly, he has vanished from the chess scene after the debacle at this year's SEA Games in Vietnam. But these are questions that only he himself can answer. We can only speculate and guess. But I sincerely hope he hasn't given up on his quest. Please do continue to entertain us with your superb games.
